Cabernet Sauvignon done, Malbec on Friday

We managed to get the remaining fruit and only had to dodge one small unexpected shower – thanks to those whose schedule was flexible and were able to help us pull it off – pun intended 😝

Our next adventure will be on Friday, September 14, we’ll be harvesting the Malbec. It’s a very friendly grape with large clusters and (usually) easy to locate stems.

We’ll start at daylight unless (I hate to have to say this again) it’s raining. We’ll keep an eye on the weather and the forecast and try to keep you updated in a timely manner.

Total Cabernet Sauvignon picked was 4,096 lbs (3,637 lbs on Tues and 459 lbs today)

We have a plan

Update as of 10:45 am Wed:

We’re mobilizing now to pick the last of the Cabernet Sauvignon that we couldn’t get yesterday. We’ll start shortly and will pick until it’s done – depending on how many folks are here it may only take a few hours. Come on over if it works for your schedule.

Ready Set Harvest – Now!

Update as of 10:30 am

It looks as though we’ll have a break in the storms for a few hours so we’re breaking out the buckets and bins and will see what we can do.

If you are able to head over here we’d love to see you, but if you can’t make it no worries, we understand.

Thanks for being flexible!!!

Wine Awards – Lost Oak Winery and Burning Daylight Vineyards

We’ve been so busy working to make great fruit that we didn’t realize how many awards have been earned by the wines Lost Oak Winery has produced from our fruit. We finally put it all in one place, and it’s definitely something to cheer about – we’re thrilled that our fruit has found a good home with the talented winemakers at Lost Oak Winery!

Harvest volunteers conquered the Cabernet Franc

It was a great day!  About 30 people worked like champs to harvest 9,577 lbs  (4.79 tons) of Cabernet Franc and 612 lbs of Vermentino for a grand total of 10,189 lbs – that’s 5.09 TONS of fruit!    What a fabulous group of folks!  Many thanks to all of you who were here, we couldn’t do it without you.

After the last trailer of fruit left we packed up our equipment quickly and headed over to Lost Oak Winery to check on our ‘babies’ in the crush barn.  We were thrilled to learn that we set a new record for sugar accumulation for our Cabernet Franc of 25.5° Brix.  The fruit also had excellent maturity and good color – all wonderful news and a great reward for all those hours in the vineyard.

We still have Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon on the vine.  We’ll be monitoring and testing and will let you know when they’re ready to harvest.  The Malbec could be ready in 1-2 weeks, the Cabernet Sauvignon will likely be 2-4 weeks, but that’s just an estimate and the grapes are going to do what the grapes are doing to do.

The last load of Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is ready to harvest!

Howdy everybody, here we go again – the Cabernet Franc is ready to pick so we will harvest this Saturday (August 25).

We will begin at first light (about 7:00 am) and will go until the grapes are all picked or it gets too hot.

We’re estimating the crop at around 9,000 lbs so if you can pick for the whole morning or even just part of it come on over, we appreciate any help!

We’ll have lots of water, Gatorade, and of course food/snacks 🙂  We’ll also have sunscreen and bug spray (just in case).

We have harvest shears here for you to use.  Some folks like to wear a glove on one hand since it can prevent the shears from cutting your fingers instead of the grape stem.  Many folks sit on an overturned bucket but you can bring a chair or stool if you prefer.

You do not have to carry the full buckets, just fill them and leave them in the row.   The vines are not prickly so you don’t have to wear long sleeves/pants unless you prefer to for sun protection, and a hat is a good idea.  There may be some fire ants in a few spots so shoes/socks are usually better than sandals but choice of footwear is up to you.

If you are able to make it and can let me know it always helps to have a head count, but feel free to come even if you don’t reply ahead of time – all pickers are appreciated :0

Sauvignon Blanc and Malvasia Bianca done and dusted

It was a wonderful harvest day!  With the help of about 30 volunteers the remaining 5,546 lbs of Sauvignon Blanc along with 2,894 lbs of Malvasia Bianca were picked and sent to Lost Oak Winery by 10:15 am.   Amazing! Many thanks to all who came, thanks for getting it done and making it fun.
